What to Use to Clean a Carpet

Carpets have been put in people’s homes for hundreds of years and they’ve earned their place as a beloved fixture. These floor coverings are great noise insulators, they soften the blow if you so happen to fall, and, best of all, they keep your feet toasty warm at all times. Evidently, there are many benefits of having a carpet installed in your home, but like with many things, you have to take the good with the bad and carpets can be pretty difficult to clean. If you’re having trouble getting dirt, grime, and difficult stains out of your plush floor covering, you’re in luck because today we’ll be uncovering 7 tried-and-true carpet cleaning solutions!

1. White Vinegar

White vinegar is an effective natural cleaning agent that gets rid of stains as well as unwanted smells. To get the perfect white vinegar cleaning solution, mix half a cup of white vinegar with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray the solution liberally on the spot that needs cleaning and leave the vinegar to do its job for 15 minutes. Once the vinegar has saturated the stain, blot the area with a dry paper towel. 2. Baking Soda

This handy deodorizer is an excellent spot stain remover, and it can work wonders when combined with white vinegar. Create a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and baking soda, then dilute the resulting thick paste with warm water until you get a runny consistency. Use an abrasive sponge to rub the solution into the stain and let the affected area dry. Vacuum up the remnants of baking soda once the carpet is dry to the touch and say sayonara to that pesky stain! Baking Soda

3. Club Soda

If your carpet has been subjected to spilled wine or beer, club soda is a great go-to. Grab a clean white cloth and blot the stain to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Dip another cloth in club soda and blot the area until the stain lifts. Repeat this process as necessary until the stain is fully removed.

4. Detergent-Based Cleaning Solutions

Grease stains usually need a stronger solution to come out, and detergent-based cleaning solutions like dishwashing liquid usually do the trick. Dilute half a teaspoon of clear liquid detergent with one cup of warm water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the grease-stained area with the solution and use a sponge to gently rub it in. Use a paper towel to blot the area then allow the carpet to fully dry before you vacuum it to get rid of those last bits of residue. Detergent-Based Cleaning Solutions

5. Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a strong chemical compound and effective bleaching agent that is particularly good at getting blood stains out of carpets. Before hydrogen peroxide is applied to a blood stain, you should first use a mixture of water and mild detergent to loosen up the dried blood. Scrape as much as it off as you can then pour hydrogen peroxide directly on the stain to tackle the rest. Use a white towel to dry the carpet after the hydrogen peroxide has worked its magic. 6. Shaving Cream

Believe it or not, shaving cream is actually a pretty great solution for most mild carpet stains. Simply apply this lubricating cream to the stain and let it set for 30 minutes. After it has set, blot it away with a dry towel, give the area a spray with a mixture of equal parts vinegar and water, and wipe the solution away with a cloth.Shaving Cream

7. Baking Powder and Corn Flour

If you want to try to avoid getting your carpet wet, baking powder and corn flour make for an awesome dry cleaning option. Corn flour is a thickening agent that absorbs and extracts oil while baking powder effectively tackles unwanted odours. Sprinkle a mixture of equal parts baking powder and corn flour to the stained area and leave it on for at least 15 minutes. Once the starch has absorbed the grease from the carpet, vacuum the powder up. Repeat the process as needed and remember – the sooner you apply starch to a stain, the more effective it will be! Armed with these carpet cleaning solutions, you’ll be well equipped to deal with all types of stubborn stains going forward. With that said, the only way to get rid of deep-seated dirt in your carpet is to get it professionally cleaned, and if you’re looking for carpet cleaning in Toronto Love Your Carpet is the place to go!
